Bite-sized blog post: Abby Epstein

ABBY EPSTEIN directed for the theater for a number of years before adding documentary filmmaking to her repertoire. She formed a theatre company in Chicago (Roadworks Productions) and then went on to form Ricki & Abby Films with Ricki Lake.

Epstein’s first documentary Until the Violence Stops (2003) stemmed from her work on Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues.

Bite-sized blog post: Caroline Suh

CAROLINE SUH has produced many documentaries and directed for the Sundance series Iconoclasts.

She directed the documentary Frontrunners (2008) and most recently directed a short film about gender inequity in the film industry, The 4% – which also can be viewed as a series of shorts on the Epix website.

MICHELE JOSUE headed to Los Angeles after graduating from Emerson College and started working as an editor and in the Art department of several features.

Her debut feature film Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine (2014) is a documentary about the tragic death of her friend Matthew Shepard.

Bite-sized blog post: Leigh Janiak

LEIGH JANIAK co-wrote her first feature Honeymoon (2014) with her friend Phil Graziadei and it premiered at SXSW. Producer Patrick Baker had hired Janiak to work for the production company he was helming and two years later read the script and signed on to produce.

Janiak has gone on to direct for television and is attached to direct a remake of The Craft.

Bite-sized blog post: Anne Renton

ANNE RENTON hails from Australia but directs in Los Angeles.

Her first feature film The Perfect Family (2011) stars Kathleen Turner and Emily Deschanel and tackles religion’s taboos concerning homosexuality. She has gone on to direct for television including the TV series Bones.

Bite-sized blog post: Ricki Stern & Annie Sundberg

RICKI STERN and ANNIE SUNDBERG met while students at Dartmouth and have since gone on to direct several documentaries together, a reality series following Anna Wintour’s and Diane Von Furstenberg’s Fashion Fund competition and have formed a company, Break Thru Films.

Their documentary The Trials of Daryl Hunt (2006) was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. Their latest endeavor Marathon: The Patriots’ Day Bombing is part of the HBO slate of films announced for this year.

Bite-sized blog post: Lacey Schwartz

LACEY SCHWARTZ studied law at Harvard. She directed the documentary Little White Lie (2014) which was screened as a part of the PBS series Independent Lens.

She has also worked as a producer.

BEEBAN KIDRON began as a filmmaker in London where she directed the mini-series of Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges are not the Only Fruit (1990) for the BBC. She also started Film Club, an after-school program for kids in England and Whales.

She moved to Hollywood to direct Used People (1992) with Shirley MacLaine and directs both narrative fiction and documentary.

Bite-sized blog post: Lauren Greenfield

LAUREN GREENFIELD is a photographer and artist as well as a filmmaker. She has been nominated for a DGA award for Best Director in the documentary realm and for commercials.

Greenfield received the Sundance Directing Award for her film The Queen of Versailles in 2012.
