Bite-sized blog post: Clare Kilner

CLARE KILNER began her career as a Stage Manager in the British theatre scene. She made a short film applied and was rejected from several UK film schools – made another film and then got into the Royal College of Art in London.

After her first feature film Janice Beard (1999) appeared at the Cannes market she secured American representation with the Gersh Agency and went on to direct features in Hollywood.

HOLLY MORRIS has worked as a correspondent and author as well as directing documentary films.

Morris is the founder of Adventure Divas, a PBS documentary series, a unique character driven travel series.

Bite-sized blog post: Millicent Shelton

MILLICENT SHELTON received an MFA at NYU and has gone on to direct for numerous television series. Her entree into the world of film was as a wardrobe assistant on Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing (1989).

Shelton’s feature film directorial debut Ride (1998) and was the first African-American woman to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for her directing of an episode of 30 Rock.

Bite-sized blog post: Peggy Holmes

PEGGY HOLMES is a choreographer, dancer and director. She choreographed the scene with Michelle Pfeiffer on the piano in The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989).

Her film directing debut was The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning (2008). She has gone on to direct other Disney projects.

Bite-sized blog post: Leigh Janiak

LEIGH JANIAK co-wrote her first feature Honeymoon (2014) with her friend Phil Graziadei and it premiered at SXSW. Producer Patrick Baker had hired Janiak to work for the production company he was helming and two years later read the script and signed on to produce.

Janiak has gone on to direct for television and is attached to direct a remake of The Craft.

Bite-sized blog post: Anne Renton

ANNE RENTON hails from Australia but directs in Los Angeles.

Her first feature film The Perfect Family (2011) stars Kathleen Turner and Emily Deschanel and tackles religion’s taboos concerning homosexuality. She has gone on to direct for television including the TV series Bones.

Bite-sized blog post: Laura Dern

LAURA DERN is of course well known as an actor but she has also had a turn at directing a few short segments for television.

Laura Dern was a director on the Lifetime series Call Me Crazy: A Five Film (2013), five stories surrounding mental illness all directed by women. The series was a follow-up to the series Five of stories about women and breast cancer also all directed by women.

ALISON EASTWOOD has followed in her father’s footsteps (Clint Eastwood) and directed films.

Eastwood began studying acting and then moved into directing with her first feature film Rails and Ties (2007).

JESSICA BENDINGER wrote and produced the film Bring it On (2000).

Bendinger worked as a writer and creative consultant before directing the feature film Stick It (2006) for Disney.

Bite-sized blog post: Beeban Kidron

BEEBAN KIDRON began as a filmmaker in London where she directed the mini-series of Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges are not the Only Fruit (1990) for the BBC. She also started Film Club, an after-school program for kids in England and Whales.

She moved to Hollywood to direct Used People (1992) with Shirley MacLaine and directs both narrative fiction and documentary.
