Bite-sized blog: Drew Barrymore

DREW BARRYMORE is an actress who jump started her career as a child with Steven Spielberg’s E.T. (1982) and comes from the iconic Barrymore family in Hollywood.

She has tried her hand at directing first with a television documetnary Choose or Lose Presents: The Best Place to Start (2004) and then went on to direct the narrative feature film Whip It (2009), a Fox Searchlight film.

Bite-sized blog post: Kristin Hahn

KRISTIN HAHN began her career directing the independent documentary Anthem (1997) where she set out with her friend Shainee Gabel to interview people across America about the American dream. She studied at USC.

She has gone on to work as a producer for Jennifer Aniston’s company Echo Films where she gathered a group of female directors to work on Five (2011), a group of short films about breast cancer for Lifetime television. She has since gone on to form her own production company Hahnscape which will focus on literary adaptations.

Bite-sized blog post: Liv Ullman

Liv Ullman

LIV ULLMAN is of course most well-known as the muse for Ingmar Bergman films and an actress but she has also down her share of directing.

She made her stage directorial debut in  2009 at the age of 70 with a version of A Streetcar Named Desire starring Cate Blanchett but her first camera directing opportunity happened with Love (1982) a segment of nine vignettes all written and directed by women.

ANGELA ROBINSON studied theater at Brown University before getting her MFA at NYU. Robinson has directed, produced and written for several television shows, including HBO’s True Blood.

SUSANNE BIER is a Danish director nonetheless she has made her mark in the United States, winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 2011 for her film In a Better World (2010) – the year after Bigelow won the Oscar for Hurt Locker (2009).

In June of this year it was announced that Bier was on the shortlist to potentially direct the next Bond film.

Jennifer Lee

JENNIFER LEE is one of the directors of Frozen (2013) which was one of only two films in 2013 in the top 100 box office films directed by a woman and garnered her the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

She wrote the screenplay adaptation for A Wrinkle in Time (2017) for Disney which will be directed by Ava Duvernay.

They have gone on to work on other projects together including Josie and the Pussycats (2001) and worked on a script of the famous book “Men are from Mars. Women are From Venus.” which has yet to be made.
