KAREN MONCFRIEFF, after obtaining her B.S. in Performance Studies from Northwestern University (a much more academic and esoteric pursuit than many may realize – I know from having went to one of the few Performance Studies programs in existence myself), moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career in film.

Her feature directorial debut Blue Car (2002) was distributed by Miramax.

Ally Walker

ALLY WALKER received her degree in biochemsitry from UC Santa Cruz and was preparing for medical school (similar to Dorothy Arzner) before moving into film and television. Most of her career has been dedicated to work in front of the camera as an actor but in 2005 she released her directorial debut, the documentary For Norman Wherever You Are inspired by her experience trying to navigate the social care system in Los Angeles in order to help a baby and his mother.

Her narrative feature film Sex, Death and Bowling (2015) premiered at the San Diego Film Festival and is distributed in the US by Monterey Media.

Bite-sized blog post: Liv Ullman

Liv Ullman

LIV ULLMAN is of course most well-known as the muse for Ingmar Bergman films and an actress but she has also down her share of directing.

She made her stage directorial debut in  2009 at the age of 70 with a version of A Streetcar Named Desire starring Cate Blanchett but her first camera directing opportunity happened with Love (1982) a segment of nine vignettes all written and directed by women.

  • “At the time the four female directors were at work in Toronto, there was not a single woman directing cameras on a movie set anywhere in the United States.” – Chicago Tribune 1/11/1981
