RAMONA S. DIAZ studied communications at Stanford University and has gone on to direct documentaries which have been distributed by PBS’ Independent Lens.

She founded her production company Cine Diaz in 2000 to produce documentary feature films.

ELIZA HITTMAN was named as one of the 25 New Faces of Film to watch by Filmmaker Magazine in 2013. She got her MFA at Cal Arts.

Her feature directorial debut It Felt Like Love (2013) premiered at Sundance and was according to the New York Times shot for less than $100,000 in 18 days.

SINI ANDERSON began her career as a professional dancer while still a teenager in Chicago.

Her documentary The Punk Singer (2013) premiered at SXSW and was distributed by IFC.

HANNAH FIDELL studied film theory at Indiana University and film at The New School in New York.

She supported herself as a waiter while making her feature film A Teacher (2013) – the film is now being adapted by HBO (working with Fidell) into a television series.

Bite-sized blog post: Lauren Wolkstein

LAUREN WOLKSTEIN obtained her MFA in film from Columbia. Her thesis film Cigarette Candy (2009) screened at SXSW. She was chosen as one of the 25 New Faces of Independent Film by Filmmaker Magazine in 2013.

Her short film The Strange Ones (co-directed with Christopher Radcliffe) screened at Sundance and spawned her feature directorial debut, The Strange Ones (2017).

Bite-sized blog post: Patricia Birch

PATRICIA BIRCH is a choreographer and director. In addition to choreographing for iconic television series (Saturday Night Live, Boardwalk Empire) she has also choreographed for feature films including Penny Marshall’s Big (1988) with the famous scene of Tom Hanks dancing on the life-size piano.

Her directorial credits include Grease 2 (1982). She won an Emmy for directing Unforgettable, with Love: Natalie Cole Sings the Songs of Nat King Cole (1992).

Bite-sized blog post: Liv Ullman

LIV ULLMAN is of course most well-known as the muse for Ingmar Bergman films and an actress but she has also down her share of directing.

She made her stage directorial debut in 2009 at the age of 70 with a version of A Streetcar Named Desire starring Cate Blanchett but her first camera directing opportunity happened with Love (1982) a segment of nine vignettes all written and directed by women.

ANNE WHEELER studied Mathematics while putting herself through the University of Alberta as a performer. Her feature film Better Than Chocolate (1999) was distributed by Trimark Pictures and garnered critical acclaim.

QUOTE: I don’t know why people make such a fuss of me being a camerawoman. This machine is less complicated than a zigzag sewing machine and lighter than a six-month-old baby.

LIZ GARBUS formed her company Moxie Firecracker Films in 1988 and has gone on to direct numerous documentaries.

What Happened Miss Simone? (2015) garmered Garbus’ second Academy Award nomination and she is now in talks with Amazon Studios to direct the narrative film Lost Girls.
