Lynn Hershman, Portraits and Artwork. Assigned by Phillip Gefter. Assignment #10100346A

LYNN HERSHMAN LEESON is most well known for her work as a visual and performance artist but she has also directed several narrative fiction films starring Tilda Swinton – and a feature length documentary about women working in the visual arts, !Women Art Revolution (2010).

Her first feature film Conceiving Ada (1997) premiered at Sundance where she also screened subsequent films, including her hybrid film Strange Culture (2007) which was also exhibited on the Sundance Channel.

They recently produced Thirtyish (2013), a tv pilot together which Adar directed.

Best Foreign Language Film winner director Susanne Bier poses with her Oscar at the 83rd annual Academy Awards in Hollywood on February 27, 2010. UPI/Phil McCarten

SUSANNE BIER is a Danish director nonetheless she has made her mark in the United States, winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 2011 for her film In a Better World (2010) – the year after Bigelow won the Oscar for Hurt Locker (2009).

In June of this year it was announced that Bier was on the shortlist to potentially direct the next Bond film.

Lorene Scafaria

Before directing for film LORENE SCAFARIA wrote and produced a play at the Producer’s Club in NYC (a small dingy theatre that is the home to many Off-Off-Off Broadway productions).

She went on to write for film and television and has directed for the hit comedy series New Girl. Her latest film directorial endeavor, The Meddler (2015) stars Susan Sarandon.

Her feature film Hannah Free (2009) was based on the play of the same name by Claudia Allen. When she’s not directing Carlton works as a producer for PBS Television and Sirius Radio.

After her first feature film Acts of Worship (2001) premiered at Sundance Film Festival ROSEMARY RODRIGUEZ began directing television thanks to the John Wells Women and Minority Fellowship.

Her film Silver Skies (2015) had Dennis Farina attached who Rodriguez had worked with on Law & Order and eh passed away two weeks before shooting. She dedicated the finished film to him.

Lise Swenson

LISE SWENSON founded the ATA (Artists’ Television Access) in San Francisco in 1984 before directing her first feature film Mission Movie (2004), a massive collaborative endeavor with several of her students. She worked professionally as a producer and a director while continuing to inspire students.

Her next feature directorial endeavor Saltwater (2014) also included many of her students and after years in the making premiered in San Francisco in 2013.

Vanessa Hope

VANESSA HOPE directed several shorts about China before embarking on her feature length documentary film All Eyes and Ears (2015) addressing US-China relations.

Before becoming a filmmaker Hope studied law and worked in foreign policy. She is fluent in Chinese and and produced a web series for NYU’s U.S.-Asia Law Institute called Law, Life & Asia.
