Sophie Hyde

The same year Richard Linklater came out with his Academy Award winning film Boyhood (2014) SOPHIE HYDE went to Sundance with her film 52 Tuesdays (2013), a film where the story unfolds and is shot every week for a year with actors and crew gathering every Tuesday to shoot a new scene.

52 Tuesdays won the World Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance in 2014.

Bite-sized blog post: Gillian Armstrong

Gillian Armstrong

Australian director GILLIAN ARMSTRONG after several successful films in Australia directed the Hollywood film Little Women (1994) starring Winona Ryder, Claire Danes, Susan Sarandon and Christian Bale.

QUOTE:
I think there is still a misconception that all directors are Cecil B. De Mille types with a loud voice and a whip. Perhaps maybe that’s why there’s always been some puzzlement about a woman in the director’s role.

Bite-sized blog post: Jane Campion

Jane-Campion-directing-Br-001

The first woman to win the Palme d’Or was JANE CAMPION for her film The Piano (1993) which also made her the second woman nominated for an Oscar for Best Director (Lina Wertmüller was nominated before Campion in 1976 for her film Seven Beauties).

In 2013 Campion took over as Cannes Jury President, the year after a petition was circulated when no women directors were represented at the festival. As Campion said about the sexism in the industry, “Excuse me gentlemen, but the guys seem to eat all the cake. It’s not that I resent the male filmmakers. I love all of them. But there is something that women are thinking of doing that we don’t get to know enough about. It’s always a surprise when a woman filmmaker does come about.”
