BERTHA BAY-SA PAN was born in New Jersey and raised in Taiwan and returned to the US to study at Boston University and get her MFA in Film from Columbia University.

Her first feature film Face (2002) premiered at Sundance. She followed it up with the feature Almost Perfect (2011).

CHERIEN DABIS is a Palestinian-American filmmaker who graduated from Columbia with an MFA before making her first Amreeka (2009).

She began her life in politics and has said that she felt she could “reach more people through fiction than politics.”

Bite-sized blog post: Ann Marie Bryan

ANN MARIE “JADE” BRYAN is the first (and only at the moment) deaf person to graduate from the NYU film production program. She received her BFA and went on to a non-profit DeafVision Filmworks.

She has worked in narrative and documentary and continues to break barriers. Her feature length fiction film If You Could Hear My Own Tune (2011) is about a deaf women looking for love.

Bite-sized blog post: Kirsten Johnson

KIRSTEN JOHNSON is a renowned cinematographer who has won numerous awards for shooting documentaries including for The Oath (2010), Pray the Devil Back to Hell (2008) and CitizenFour (2014).

She has also directed documentaries including the recent Sundance premiere Cameraperson (2016) which delves into her experiences shooting documentaries.

JENNIFER KENT first learned directing by reaching out to Lars Von Trier and asking to study under him and she assisted him with his film Dogville (2003).

Her feature The Babadook (2014) premiered at Sundance and was based on her short film Monster (2005).

The Duplass brothers are known for their indie film making as well as their acting – KATIE ASELTON is part of that production team and directed her first feature, which was self-funded thanks to her acting work, The Freebie (2010).

Her second feature was the the indie thriller Black Rock (2012).

ANNA MASTRO’s short film Bench Seat (2011) is a musical with a screenplay written by Neil LaBute. Mastro moved from Seattle to Los Angeles to start her career in directing.

She has gone on to direct feature films and television including for Finding Carter and Jane the Virgin.
