KIRSTEN JOHNSON is a renowned cinematographer who has won numerous awards for shooting documentaries including for The Oath (2010), Pray the Devil Back to Hell (2008) and CitizenFour (2014).

She has also directed documentaries including the recent Sundance premiere Cameraperson (2016) which delves into her experiences shooting documentaries.

JENNIFER KENT first learned directing by reaching out to Lars Von Trier and asking to study under him and she assisted him with his film Dogville (2003).

Her feature The Babadook (2014) premiered at Sundance and was based on her short film Monster (2005).

Bite-sized blog post: Katie Aselton

The Duplass brothers are known for their indie film making as well as their acting – KATIE ASELTON is part of that production team and directed her first feature, which was self-funded thanks to her acting work, The Freebie (2010).

Her second feature was the the indie thriller Black Rock (2012).

Leslye Headland directed her first feature Bachelorette (2012) based on the play she wrote with the same name.

She has just been slated to direct her first pilot for ABC.

Bite-sized blog post: Anna Mastro

ANNA MASTRO’s short film Bench Seat (2011) is a musical with a screenplay written by Neil LaBute. Mastro moved from Seattle to Los Angeles to start her career in directing.

She has gone on to direct feature films and television including for Finding Carter and Jane the Virgin.

CHLOE ZHAO studied political science at Mount Holyoke College before attending NYU for an MFA in film and then writing and directing her first feature Songs my Brothers Taught Me (2015).

The film premiered at Sundance in 2015.

HILARY BROUGHER teaches at Columbia University film school in NYC. Her first featue film The Sticky Fingers of Time (1997) was produced by Good Machine.

Her second feature Stephanie Daley (2006) premiered at Sundance.

GRACE LEE directs both documentaries and narrative fiction films. She started out as a journalist before deciding to share stories via film.

Lee then attended UCLA to study film. She is a 2016 Sundance Institute Women’s Initiative fellow.

CHIEMI KARASAWA has produced almost twenty documentaries and is credited with directing two including Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me (2013).

She has also worked as a script supervisor on numerous narrative fiction films. She founded Isotope Films.

Diablo Cody is best known for her work as a screenwriter, having won an Academy Award for Juno (2007) and has written for TV and film before directing her first (and based on her experiences apparently) directorial endeavor Paradise (2013).
