Bite-sized blog-post: Joan Micklin Silver

Joan Micklin Silver

A producer once told her, “Feature films are expensive to make and expensive to market and women directors are one more problem we don’t need.” In response  her husband insisted that they raise the funds and give her the chance to make a movie.

Silver went on to direct Hester Street (1975) and along with her husband and a few others successfully self distributed – before the age of the internet.

Bite-sized blog post: Kelly Reichardt

Kelly Reichardt

KELLY REICHARDT almost missed the debut her first feature film at Sundance, River of Grass (1994) because she couldn’t afford the plane ticket across country and got stuck on a train that took five days instead of three to make the trek.

Many of Reichardt’s films are set and shot in Oregon and she is known for character driven pieces including Wendy and Lucy (2008) starring Michelle Williams who she reunites with for her most recent film Certain Women premiering at Sundance.

Bite-sized blog post: Ida Lupino

Ida-Lupino

One of the only women to work as a director in Hollywood in the 1940s IDA LUPINO began her career as an actress and succeeded directing and acting in numerous films of the era – specializing in noir.

Well before “indie film” became a household phrase she, along with her husband, ventured out on her own to direct and produce her own work outside of the studio system. As the only woman in the DGA meetings opened with, “Gentleman – and Mrs. Lupino.”

Bite-sized blog post: Deborah Kampmeier

Deborah Kampmeier

DEBORAH KAMPMEIER made her first film Virgin (2003) with a budget of only $65,000.00 thanks to digital technology and to actress Robin Wright who agreed to take part in the film despite the lack of a big budget because she loved the script and knew and respected Kampmeier. The film went on to critical acclaim and to receive the accolades of audiences.

Kampmeier’s second film Hounddog (2007) was plagued with controversy due to a rape scene involving the then 12 year old Dakota Fanning. The scene  in no way exploited Fanning due to the way in which it was shot but the controversy eclipsed the reality and ignored the horror of the story being told which is a reality for many young girls and focused on the fictional circumstances of the actress playing the scene. Kampmeier teaches acting in NYC and continues to direct.

Bite-sized blog post: Susan Seidelman

Susan-Seidelman-on-the-set-of-Desperately-Seeking-Susan-2

After graduating from NYU Susan Seidelman did what many filmmakers did in the eighties and made an indie film on a shoe string budget which received critical acclaim, Smithereens (1982).

Following the success of Smithereens Seidelman went on to make the classic Desperately Seeking Susan giving her neighbor Madonna her first film role

Bite-sized blog post: Chantal Akerman

Chantal Akerman

I had the opportunity to study with CHANTAL AKERMAN right before she left this world in October 2015. She was definitely eccentric in her brilliance and never filtered her points of view … which sometimes caused for controversy… nonetheless she clearly cared about film and those studying it and her passion for it never dulled.

Best known in academic and art house circles for her feminist epic Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) which she directed at the young age of 25 Akerman vacillated between documentaries and fiction but always remained faithful to expressing the truth as she saw it.

Bite-sized blog post: Maggie Greenwald

Maggie Greenwald

Unlike many up -and-coming filmmakers in the 1980s who went the film school route MAGGIE GREENWALD learned the ropes of filmmaking directly through working on sets, driving vans, editing and exposing herself to the ins-and-outs of the industry before making her first feature Home Remedy (1987).

Her film noir The Kill-Off (1989) based on the novel by Jim Thompson is listed as one of the top 100 American Independent Films by the British Film Institute. Greenwald went on to direct The Ballad of Little Joe (1993) taking over the traditionally male-genre of the Western and putting a woman at the center of it and she continues to direct films and for television.

Bite-sized blog post: Julie Dash

Julie Dash behind the camera

The first film directed by an African-American woman to be released theatrically didn’t happen until 1991 with Daughters of the Dust directed by JULIE DASH.

Dash was first exposed to cinematography in an after-school program at the Studio Museum in Harlem where she and a friend believed they were enrolling in a class on still photography, not knowing what cinematography was. She went on to study at AFI with cinema legends such as Ingmar Bergman and UCLA at the tail end of the movement that became known as the LA Rebellion.
