Bite-sized blog post: Hilari Scarl

With a background in theatre director HILARI SCARL took on the directorial challenges of the reality show On the Lot (2007), a show which pitted film directors against one another.

She segued her success from the reality show into directing her first feature, the documentary See What I’m Saying: The Deaf Entertainers Documentary (2009) which she successfully self-distributed.

Bite-sized blog post: Rebecca Thomas

REBECCA THOMAS’ first short Ivan Sings (2009) premiered at Sundance before she went to Columbia University for her MFA in filmmaking.

Thomas directed her first feature Electrick Children (2012) while still a student at Columbia. The television pilot she directed Little Darlings has recently been picked up and she is slated to direct the live-action film of The Little Mermaid and the movie of John Green’s novel Looking for Alaska.

SAM TAYLOR-JOHNSON is a fine-artist and filmmaker from England who infiltrated Hollywood to direct Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) for Universal.

Her first feature film Nowhere Boy (2009) was about the childhood of Beatles icon John Lennon.

After working as a performance artist TAMARA JENKINS attended NYU for an MFA in filmmmaking.

The script for her first feature film Slums of Beverly Hills (1998) was developed as part of the Sundance Institute.

Bite-sized blog post: Joyce Wu

JOYCE WU grew up in Detroit and directed theatre before heading to NYU for her MFA in film.

Her recent feature film She Lights Up Well (2014) reveals autobiographical elements focusing on an Asian American filmmaker who hails from Detroit. It is distributed via iTunes and Verizon on demand.

Bite-sized blog post: Kathleen Collins

KATHLEEN COLLINS has been recognized as the first African American woman to write and direct a feature length film.

Losing Ground (1982) was Collins’ second film and first feature (The Cruz Brothers and Miss Malloy was less than an hour so not quite a feature). Unfortunately, it was also her last. She died of cancer at 46.

JANE AINBINDER got her MFA at USC before directing her first feature film Nail Polish (2006) which screened at the Mill Valley Film Festival among other prestigious festivals.

Bite-sized blog post: Maya Angelou

MAYA ANGELOU is of course best known as an author and poet but she was also a filmmaker.

She attended the AFI Directing Workshop for Women in 1974 and then in 1998 at the age of 70 directed her first feature film Down in the Delta.

Her first feature film The Last Supper (1995) starred Cameron Diaz and Courtney B. Vance. Her upcoming feature The Bye Bye Man written by her husband Jonathan Penner is a thriller co-produced by Los Angeles Media Fund.
