SUSAN FROEMKE started out as an associate producer for the seminal Maysles brothers film Grey Gardens (1975) and has gone on to let the “truth unfold before [the] camera” through numerous documentaries of her own.

As of the writing of this blog she has won three Emmys.

ZEINABU IRENE DAVIS teaches film at UC San Diego and can boast an eclectic range of films, having made narrative, experimental and documentary.

Her most recent feature is a documentary about the UCLA film movement now known as the LA Rebellion (the group included filmmaker Julie Dash) – Spirits of Rebellion: Black Film at UCLA (2011).

BARBRA STREISAND is a musical theater and actress powerhouse who made her directorial debut with Yentl (1983) which she fought to get made and opened the door for future directing and producing opportunities.

Much like Mary Pickford in the early days of the industry Streisand insists on shaping her own career. She was the Oscar presenter for the monumental moment when Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director.

Bite-sized blog post: Rainy Kerwin

RAINY KERWIN’s directorial debut premiered recently at the Palm Beach International Film Festival and is making its way to NYC April 23rd at the Manhattan Film Festival.

Kerwin is an actress who wrote and produced shorts getting her feet wet and inspiring her to direct The Wedding Invitation (2016) with an all female crew.

Bite-sized blog post: Dorothy Davenport

DOROTHY DAVENPORT was one of the women of Early Hollywood. She was an actress, author, producer and all-around filmmaker as many women were in the early days of the industry.

She directed several films but was first officially credited on the film Linda (1929).

JENNIFER LYNCH is the daughter of cult classic director David Lynch but she is also a director in her own right.

Her first feature film Boxing Helena (1995) was plagued with a lawsuit with famous actress Nicole Kidman but was still made and led to a successful career for Lynch directing television and features.

NEEMA BARNETTE is the first African-American sticom director and she has directed numerous sitcoms.

Barnette has joined forces with Ava Duvernay on her new show Queen Sugar which brags an all female directing slate. She graduated with a BA from the City College of New York and an MFA from NYU Tisch School o f the Arts.

MIRANDA JULY was raised in Berkeley, CA and made her feature film debut with Me and You and Everyone (2005) which was shot digitally before ti was ubiquitous and won the Camera d’Or at Cannes.

She went on to make the feature film The Future (2011) and has recently written a novel.

TANYA HAMILTON moved to the United States from Jamaica at the age of eight. She studied at Cooper Union and then got her MFA at Columbia before making her first feature film Night Catches Us (2010).

Night Catches Us was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.

Bite-sized blog post: Lisa Gottlieb

LISA GOTTLIEB credits her opportunity to make the gender role reversal comedy classic Just One of the Guys (1985) to the lawsuit filed against Columbia Pictures in the early eighties by the Original Six and the DGA.

Gottlieb has gone on to direct for television and teach filmmaking at various Universities including USC.
