Bite-sized blog post: Darnell Martin

DARNELL MARTIN was rejected three times from NYU film school before finally attending to get her MFA. While not getting into NYU she was working on sets and finally was accepted after a personal recommendation from Spike Lee who she worked with as an AC on Do The Right Thing.

Martin is touted as the first African American female to direct a studio film with her first feature I Like It Like That (1994). She has gone on to direct the feature film Cadillac Records (2008) and an adaptation of Zora Neal Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God (2005) as well as numerous television series.

DEBBIE ALLEN, a well-known dancer and choreographer, began directing regularly for television when starring in the series Fame in the eighties.

She continues to direct for television and the stage.

KAREN ARTHUR was the first women to direct a mini-series for American television with Crossings (1986).

She won an Emmy for directing Cagney & Lacey and has gone on to direct numerous television movies and for series.

Bite-sized blog post: Mary Lambert

MARY LAMBERT graduated from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design before beginning her career as a director working on music videos for well-known artists at the height of the MTV craze.

She has gone on to direct numerous television movies and for many series and to specialize in the horror genre.

Bite-sized blog post: Anita W. Addison

One of the first African American women to hold a senior producer position at a major television network ANITA W. ADDISON directed television for major television shows in the eighties and nineties.

Before taking on the network career she took film classes at NYU and attended UCLA at night in order to get her Masters – after she obtained a Masters in journalism from Columbia and analyzed data for Nielsen ratings for a small independent station. Her short film Savannah was nominated for an Academy Award in 1984.

Bite-sized blog post: Rachel Feldman

RACHEL FELDMAN directed numerous television episodes and movies after moving to LA from NYC where she got her MFA at NYU and was a chair of the DGA Women’s Steering Committee.

She is currently in development on a bio pic about Lilly Ledbetter the woman who is the namesake for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act demanding equal pay for equal work!

Bite-sized blog post: Lynne Littman

LYNNE LITTMAN began her career as an investigative journalist and then won an Oscar for her short documentary Number Our Days (1976).

She then went on to direct the feature narrative Testament (1983) which was screened at Sundance and premiered at Telluride Film Festival. Her advocacy for women directors along with five other women and the DGA helped change the landscape for female filmmakers in Hollywood in the eighties and nineties.

Bite-sized blog post: Hilari Scarl

With a background in theatre director HILARI SCARL took on the directorial challenges of the reality show On the Lot (2007), a show which pitted film directors against one another.

She segued her success from the reality show into directing her first feature, the documentary See What I’m Saying: The Deaf Entertainers Documentary (2009) which she successfully self-distributed.
