Bite-sized blog post: Lynne Littman

LYNNE LITTMAN began her career as an investigative journalist and then won an Oscar for her short documentary Number Our Days (1976).

She then went on to direct the feature narrative Testament (1983) which was screened at Sundance and premiered at Telluride Film Festival. Her advocacy for women directors along with five other women and the DGA helped change the landscape for female filmmakers in Hollywood in the eighties and nineties.

As the first woman to win a Tony for Best Director for a musical with The Lion King it is no surprise that JULIE TAYMOR’s films are theatrical and visually elaborate.

Her first theatrical narrative feature film was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Titus starring Anthony Hopkins

Bite-sized blog post: Hilari Scarl

With a background in theatre director HILARI SCARL took on the directorial challenges of the reality show On the Lot (2007), a show which pitted film directors against one another.

She segued her success from the reality show into directing her first feature, the documentary See What I’m Saying: The Deaf Entertainers Documentary (2009) which she successfully self-distributed.

Bite-sized blog post: Rebecca Thomas

REBECCA THOMAS’ first short Ivan Sings (2009) premiered at Sundance before she went to Columbia University for her MFA in filmmaking.

Thomas directed her first feature Electrick Children (2012) while still a student at Columbia. The television pilot she directed Little Darlings has recently been picked up and she is slated to direct the live-action film of The Little Mermaid and the movie of John Green’s novel Looking for Alaska.

SAM TAYLOR-JOHNSON is a fine-artist and filmmaker from England who infiltrated Hollywood to direct Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) for Universal.

Her first feature film Nowhere Boy (2009) was about the childhood of Beatles icon John Lennon.

Bite-sized blog post: Kathleen Collins

KATHLEEN COLLINS has been recognized as the first African American woman to write and direct a feature length film.

Losing Ground (1982) was Collins’ second film and first feature (The Cruz Brothers and Miss Malloy was less than an hour so not quite a feature). Unfortunately, it was also her last. She died of cancer at 46.
